The Journey of a Pearl

The Making of Freshwater Cultured Pearls

Traditional pearl cultivation involves first inserting a bead nucleus, then a piece of mantle tissue, inside a mollusk. Not long after this method began, pearl farmers discovered, quite accidentally, that nacre (NAY-ker) could form around mantle tissue without the presence of a bead nucleus. Leaving out the bead nucleus made the process easier and soon, this became an accepted means of production. Most freshwater pearls are nucleated only with a small piece of mantle tissue, although great strides have been made in recent years to produce bead-nucleated freshwater pearls.

Fresh water pearls make up more than 90% of today’s world wide pearl market, and have never been so large, or so widely accessible in human history. Although fresh water pearls have been found all over the world.. the most notable cultivations have been in the US, Japan and China. Dependent on the shell they are harvested from … the natural colors can vary wildly from white, cream, through golden, pink, lavender and sometimes soft blue. Beyond the natural colors, Chinese fresh water pearls are available in a dizzying array of non-natural dyed and treated colors.

Pearl Care

The oysters are given the utmost care during this time while suspended in the water. From the rafts above, technicians check water temperatures and feeding conditions daily at various depths, moving the oysters up or down as appropriate. Periodically, the oysters are lifted from the sea for cleaning and health treatments. Seaweed, barnacles and other seaborne organisms that might interfere with their feeding are removed from the oysters’ shells. The shells are also treated with medicinal compounds to discourage parasites.

Over time, after eight to 36 months of growth and care, the oysters are ready for harvest. Those that have survived the many perils of the sea are brought ashore and opened. All pearls must be cleaned and washed to remove residue and odors. They are typically tumbled in rotating
barrels with salt during this procedure. The tumbling must be closely monitored; otherwise some of the nacre may wear off.

When everything has gone well, a beauty is revealed — the result is a lovely, lustrous and very valuable cultured pearl. Chinese freshwater pearls and Akoya pearls are often treated with chemicals after drilling. This whitens them and makes the color look more even.

What is Geodes?
A Very Cool Rock Formation

Geodes are like the Tootsie Roll Pop of the geology world because underneath the hard exterior lies a surprise center!

Hollow Rocks
So, let’s start at the beginning: how do you get a hollow rock with lots of sparkling crystals inside? First you need a hollow rock. Geodes start their lives as a hollow bubble inside a layer of rock. The bubble could be from air inside explosive volcanic rock or it could come from the hollow remains of animal burrows or tree roots.

What About The Crystals?
When these rocks form from air bubbles inside of volcanic rock it is pretty easy to picture. Think about the small air bubbles you see in pumice. Now, imagine just one of those bubbles completely surrounded by black or red volcanic rock. As rain pelts down on the hot bubble, the chemicals in the rock are slowly released into the water. Some of the water soaks through the hard, rocky outside of the bubble and is trapped for a moment on the inside.

As the mineral-rich water moves on through the bubble, tiny crystals are left behind, clinging to the sides of the bubble. Millions of years pass while this in and out flow of water gradually builds crystals inside the empty space. The crystal formations might become large single crystals or tightly packed micro-crystals, so small that you can’t even distinguish one from another.

Cristela, the series, is loosely based on Cristela Alonzo’s life as a comedian. Six years into law school, Cristela is on the brink of landing her first big internship at a prestigious firm. The only thing standing between her and success, seems to be her traditional Mexican-American family.

Her family isn’t too happy with her decisions and they find her lofty career aspirations as going away from family traditions. She finds herself with one foot in the old culture that she’s working to bring into the present at home and the other in the modern world that she wants to embrace in her professional career. Cristela finds the path to the American dream not as simple, but it is full of laughter. Crystal’s sister is played by Maria Canals-Barrera, who tries her best to help our Cristela. And she has a lot to deal with, including her kids her husband. If you love comedy and want to laugh, this is the show to watch!

During the behind the scenes video, for our current Fall TV issue, Maria Canals-Barrera shares her favorite moments from her fashion photoshoot. She wore beautiful dresses from designer, Bianca Nero. Charlene K Onyx Necklace Collections

Onyx is banded chalcedony that is found in many different colors including commonly black and white.

The opacity of black onyx is all the more striking when paired with 14K gold vermeil or sterling silver for the high-impact designs.

Origin of Black Onyx

Onyx is considered to be a protective stone worn when facing adversaries in battles or conflicts of all kinds. There is myth about onyx that says the goddess Venus was resting on the banks of the Indus River. As she slept, Cupid used the point of one of his enchanted arrows to give her a manicure. The parings of her nails then fell into the waters of the sacred river. Since the nails were of heavenly origin, they sank to the river bottom and were metamorphosed into onyx.

There are a lot of interesting stories and myths about onyx, from Indians and Persians believing that wearing onyx protected them from the evil eye; to placing onyx on the stomach of a pregnant woman in labor would reduce the labor pain and bring on earlier delivery. Onyx has been used for protection, defense against negativity. Onyx is said to help with your rejuvenation, intuition, balance, grounding, self-confidence and more. Seriously, Google Black Onyx.

Regardless of the origin, the meaning or the reason; these beautiful black onyx necklace collections from Charlene K are STUNNING!! For more information about our Onyx collections, please contact us at:

Charlene K Green Turquoise Gold Ring

Lime Green Turquoise is very popular for its bright color that stands out in Southwestern Jewelry. The lime green color also goes great with other colorful gemstones such as Coral, Spiny Oyster, Lapis, Sugilite and even Sleeping Beauty Turquoise. Lime Green Turquoise is one of the most desirable colors in multi-colored Inlaid Jewelry as well. It is truly a beautiful gemstone and is also a rarity for Turquoise to be Lime Green. Lime Green Turquoise actually lacks certain minerals (mainly copper) which is the reason it is colored lime green. There are other gemstones such as Faustite, Calcasiderite and Variscite that come close to Lime Green Turquoise but they are not actually Turquoise.
